About This Course
When responding to emergencies, firefighters must make critical decisions in rapidly changing and dangerous circumstances while balancing the safety of individuals requesting assistance, their fellow responders, and the public at large. These decisions often involve competing priorities, limited information, and significant risks, creating unique questions regarding the scope of a firefighter’s duties and potential civil liability.
This CLE course will provide an overview of the legal issues affecting firefighters and other first responders, including the nature of firefighter training, the responsibilities and expectations placed upon emergency personnel, and the circumstances under which firefighters may face civil claims arising from their official duties. The course will examine the duties owed by firefighters during emergency responses, applicable standards of care, and common legal theories asserted in claims involving first responders.
