CLE For Newly Admitted New York Attorneys

*In response to concerns related to the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus the NYS CLE Board has temporarily suspended the live in-person requirement for Newly Admitted attorneys. You now have until 6/30/2022 to earn both your Skills and Ethics credits through our livestream webinars.

Newly admitted attorneys are required to take 16 credits each year for the first two years following their admission to the Bar. The 16 credits must consist of 3 Ethics credits, 6 Skills credits, and 7 PP (Professional Practice) and LPM (Law Professional Practice) credits. Your 7 PP/LPM credits can be completed using self-study courses while both the Ethics and Skills credits can be completed with webinars due to the temporary exception.

NACLE offers an extensive library of transitional courses to Newly Admitted attorneys with our Online, iOS/Android App, CD, and DVD formats in the areas of PP and LPM. Additionally, you can satisfy your Ethics and Skills requirements through our partnership with the New York County Lawyers' (NYCLA) Association which holds live webinars that you can watch online or on your smartphone.

You can see the official notice about the temporary live requirement exception here.

*COVID-19 Update: In response to concerns related to the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus the NYS CLE Board has temporarily suspended the live in-person requirement for Newly Admitted attorneys. Newly admitted attorneys are required to take "transitional” courses (designed to help them develop a foundation in the essential skills to practice law) 16 credits each year for the first two years following their admission to the Bar. The 16 credits must consist of 3 Ethics credits, 6 Skills credits, and 7 Law Practice Management (LPM) or Professional Practice (PP) credits. Newly admitted attorneys must complete their CLE requirement in a format permissible for the category of credit. For more information, see http://ww2.nycourts.gov/attorneys/cle/changes_for_2016.shtml.

New York attorneys must report that they are CLE compliant on their biennial registration form and must retain proof of compliance for a minimum of four years. Accordingly, National Academy of CLE issues a NY CLE Certificate of Attendance for all CLE activities.

Newly admitted attorneys who have earned more than 16 transitional CLE credit hours before the first anniversary of admission to the Bar may apply up to 8 of their additional credits earned during the first year of admission towards their second-year requirement. Once the second-year requirement is complete, up to 6 additional credits may be applied towards the next reporting cycle. Ethics and Professionalism credits may not be carried over. For more information, see Carryover Credit FAQs.
