About This Course
The implications of moving firms, especially when a large book of business is involved, are far reaching and can have serious consequences on the departing attorney and the related law firms if the attorney fails to time the departure correctly, take certain steps in the proper sequence, and/or does not understand or abide by their fiduciary or ethical obligations.
This CLE course will address the applicable state laws, ethical rules, and contractual obligations that must be followed in connection with a lateral partner move. It will also cover the top five areas that an attorney who is considering a move should be mindful of when preparing for and planning a move.
Key topics that will be covered include timing considerations in transitioning law firms; the relevant contractual obligations and related documents; the interview process; and attorney responsibilities relating to client matters, administrative tasks, and withdrawal. Participants will learn practical guidance to avoid common pitfalls and best practices for adhering to legal and ethical obligations. This is a must-see for any attorney who is considering a lateral move.
