About This Course

This CLE course introduces the international legal frameworks and treaties governing the use of force. Participants will examine the foundations of the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC), including its sources, scope, and applicability. The program then reviews the regulation of force under the UN Charter, focusing on the prohibition on the use of force and key exceptions such as self-defense, UN Security Council authorization, and debates surrounding humanitarian intervention.

Through selected case studies, the course explores how these principles apply in operational contexts and concludes with an overview of Rules of Engagement and their role in translating international legal obligations into operational guidance.
