Practicing law and running a business are two very different things and each involves its own set of skills. As more and more attorneys are discovering, without the skills of the latter, it’s difficult to make a success of the former. Managing a case load of personal injury and workers compensation matters can be demanding, especially in light of the day-to-day issues that arise, some more explosive than others. Running a successful injury law firm requires a global approach with excellent organizational and people skills. Cases must be managed proactively. A system should be created that allows for easy access of information and constant monitoring of cases. Each case is similar to a game of chess, where even the earliest moves can make a huge difference. Therefore, a proactive approach wherein there is constant client contact should be encouraged. Failing to recognize the importance of the attorney client relationship will result in more work, unhappy clients and bad results.

Paul M. Byck, Managing Partner of Kreiter, Byck and Associates, LLC, has been practicing what he preaches for many years. He offers an approach quite different than the mainstream law firm, where returning client calls is seen as a chore, rather than an opportunity. In this CLE course, Mr. Byck emphasizes the importance of directing each case, fostering relationship and demanding honesty in order to achieve better outcomes and ultimately, happier clients. Obtaining good recommendations and referrals from clients and attorneys alike will depend on one’s conduct and integrity as well as an effort to maintain lifelong relationships.

Some of the topics discussed are:

  • Biggest complaints about lawyers and law firms
  • Knowing your case
  • Directing your case
  • Building your client’s credibility
  • Preparing your client for trial or arbitration
  • Managing a case load
  • Smart marketing

Lecturer Bio

Paul M. Byck, Esq.

Paul M. Byck is Managing Partner of Kreiter, Byck and Associates, LLC. Paul earned his law degree from DePaul University Law School in 1990 and in the same year was admitted to the Illinois Bar and the Federal Bar-Northern District of Illinois. He spent his first three years in practice working for an insurance defense firm where he learned many of the legal strategies insurance companies and their lawyers use every day to escape paying out claims. In 1993 Paul decided he would rather put his skills to work representing injured victims and their families. With his keen ability to understand complicated medical issues, it didn’t take long for him to start winning millions for his clients, putting their hearts and minds at ease about their future. Paul’s areas of concentration are medical malpractice, workers’ compensation, and personal injury including catastrophic injury litigation, wrongful death, product liability, automobile and trucking accidents, construction accidents, birth injuries, brain trauma, and a number of other injury related matters. Paul received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University’s James Madison College in 1987, and has also earned college credit at Cambridge University in England. He has established a strong reputation in Northern Illinois for his honesty and high legal standards.
