Description

America has a long history with race. This seminar will evaluate that history through the words of the United States Supreme Court with the goal of determining how America came to this moment of racial reckoning. Further, this seminar will evaluate racial buzz phrases and how to best move toward racial reconciliation.

Lecturer Bio

Brooklyn Sawyers Belk, Esq.

Brooklyn Sawyers Belk is a partner at Weinberg Wheeler Hudgins Gunn and Dial where she is the Special Matters and Investigations practice chair and has an employment, family, and healthcare law practice. With licenses in Tennessee and Georgia, Brooklyn is a trial attorney with experience litigating cases in state and federal court with cases resulting in oral arguments before, and published opinions by, the United States Courts of Appeal. Additionally, she is the firm’s first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer. She is the third ever Advocate in Residence Visiting Professor and Lecturer at the University of Tennessee College of Law where she has taught Trial Practice for many years, and has created a course titled, Race and the United States Supreme Court that examines the question of race through landmark legal decisions.

Previously, Brooklyn had a career with the United States government serving in various Department of Justice offices and the Social Security Administration. She has a vast history of volunteerism, including as a college trustee, with community organizations and mock trial teams, and on boards. She has a national platform as a sought-after speaker, conference presenter, media commentator, trainer, writer, and mentor; and, advances the importance of diversity and inclusion, racial reconciliation, and her own brand of helping others on their journey to becoming their best selves.

A native of Southwest Virginia, Brooklyn received her J.D. from the University of Tennessee College of Law, M.A. from East Tennessee State University, and B.A. from Emory & Henry College. Brooklyn is most proud of her husband, Lamont Belk, who is an attorney manager for the Tennessee Valley Authority, professor, and former federal prosecutor; their daughter, Tress, who is a college sophomore at the University of Tennessee, and campus leader; and two sons, Joseph and Joshua, who are all-boy.
