Description

All too often, traditional negotiation strategies result in blown up deals, protracted litigation, and destroyed relationships. Since we all negotiate every day, the stakes are far too high to rely on tired tactics that don’t work. Some people believe that effective negotiators are born, not made, but this presentation will prove them wrong. Join Joe Campolo, a law firm managing partner and business owner, as he shares the alternative negotiation strategies he relies on to solve problems and get deals done.

The CLE course will cover how to:

  • Manage tension in high-stress negotiations
  • Balance ethical considerations with zealous representation
  • Use the tension between empathy and assertiveness to your advantage
  • Listen actively
  • Combat hard-bargaining tactics
  • Diagnose your own weaknesses and regain your footing

Designed for both seasoned professionals and those just starting out, this CLE course will arm you with new tools and a fresh perspective on what it means to negotiate effectively.

Lecturer Bio

Joseph N. Campolo, Esq.

Voted Best Lawyer on Long Island in 2015 and 2016 by the Long Island business community, Joe Campolo, managing partner of Campolo, Middleton & McCormick, LLP, advises business owners, executives, and Board members on legal and business strategies and negotiates on their behalf on matters including antitrust, securities, shareholder/member breakups, intellectual property, employment, and breach of fiduciary duty claims. Described by the Long Island Press as “a fearless lawyer willing to tackle big and complex cases,” Joe is routinely retained in “bet the company” legal matters by companies large and small. His deep knowledge of the inner workings of the corporate universe gives him a unique advantage in both complex transactions and litigation.

Joe has played major roles in numerous matters widely reported in the media, including representing high-level executives from public companies before the SEC, defending national not-for-profits under investigation from the New York Attorney General’s office, obtaining a verdict against sub-brokers on RICO claims in a major Ponzi scheme litigation, and spearheading several actions finding the MTA payroll tax unconstitutional. Additional representative matters include representing real estate developers in multimillion dollar IDA projects, technology companies in both buy-side and sell-side acquisitions, prominent physician groups moving healthcare systems, and defending a medical device company in Delaware Chancery Court in a patent infringement lawsuit. Joe also defends large companies in Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and other employment-related matters including class actions, prevailing wage issues, and discrimination matters. He has argued appeals on critical issues in the Appellate Division, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Delaware Supreme Court.

Prior to starting the firm, Joe served honorably in the United States Marine Corps. He has practiced law at some of Long Island’s largest law firms and served as in-house General Counsel to a national technology company, where he was ultimately promoted to President. In those roles, he was responsible for the company’s international growth and gained invaluable experience negotiating and closing all types of business agreements and transactions, raising private equity, and managing complex litigation.
