Description

A courtroom bears no small resemblance to the stage and attorneys are its most principal actors. Understanding your audience, practicing your lines, developing a good opener—all public speaking strategies that are just as applicable to attorneys in trial preparation. This CLE course will both utilize and review essential public speaking tips as they relate to trials and attorney arguments and will including closing arguments, etiquette, the distinction between testimonies and stories, appropriate use of humor and terminology.

Lecturer Bio

Michael S. Weinstock, Esq.

Michael Weinstock began practicing law as an Assistant District Attorney in Brooklyn, where he rose to the level of a felony prosecutor. While he was working as a prosecutor, Mr. Weinstock gained an enormous amount of trial experience. In one instance, he was recognized by the Inspector General of the United States after gaining an important conviction with a defendant who had used a complicated scheme to embezzle funds from the federal Americorps program. He now runs a law practice on Long Island with a focus on drunk driving defense. Before starting his own practice, Mr. Weinstock was an associate with one of the nation’s most prestigious maritime litigation law firms, where he worked in the firm’s criminal defense practice and he represented mariners and ship owners. He also spent a number of years working for a plaintiff’s firm in Manhattan that specialized in asbestos exposure and mesothelioma.

Mr. Weinstock received his Juris Doctorate from St. John’s School of Law in 1998 after obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. He is admitted to practice before the courts of the State of New York and the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern and Northern Districts of New York. Mr. Weinstock is an active member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York as well as the Nassau County Bar Association. He is a contributing author to the book “Dollars and Democracy: A Blueprint for Campaign Finance Reform” which was published by Fordham University Press in 2000.

During a period of more than ten years, Michael Weinstock was a volunteer firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician. He responded to the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001 and was later personally acknowledged by the President of the United States.
