Rabbinical court arbitrators charged with resolving contemporary disputes must are often faced with the challenge of applying age old Jewish law doctrines to relatively new legal and commercial concepts. This CLE course explores the substantive Jewish and secular law regarding defamation claims and intellectual property litigation, and how batei din (rabbinical courts) navigate these areas.

Lecturer Bios

Rabbi Yona Reiss, Esq.

Rabbi Reiss is the Av Beth Din of the Chicago Rabbinical Council, a Rosh Yeshiva at RIETS, and Chaver Beth Din at the Beth Din of America. A Yadin Yadin musmach of RIETS and an attorney who was an associate for six years at the international law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, Rabbi Reiss is a graduate of Yale Law School, where he served as a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal. He was previously the Max and Marion Grill Dean of RIETS, and before that he served as Director of the Beth Din of America. Rabbi Reiss is a member of the editorial board of Tradition, and has published articles in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Law Journal.

Daniel Rapp, Esq.

Rabbi Daniel Rapp received his bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from Yeshiva College in 1990. In 1995, he received his juris doctor from the Columbia University School of Law where he was twice named a Harlen Fisk Stone scholar for academic excellence, and was articles editor of the Columbia Business Law Review. He spent two and a half years studying at Yeshivat Kerem B’Yavne in Israel and was ordained by the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary of Yeshiva University with both yoreh yoreh and yadin yadin semichah.

Rabbi Rapp is Visiting Assistant Professor of Talmud at the Irving I. Stone Beit Medrash Program of Yeshiva University and Associate Dean of Students of Undergraduate Torah Studies. Rabbi Rapp is a Dayan (judge) at the Beth Din of America.

Rabbi Rapp is married to Dr. Chaya Rapp who is an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Yeshiva University’s Stern College for Women. They have been blessed with five wonderful daughters.
