Abrasive or burned out? Overworked or uncivil? Zealous advocate or bully? For attorneys, the line between vigorous advocacy and inappropriate conduct can become blurred—particularly in a profession where high-pressure environments, demanding clients, adversarial proceedings, and constant deadlines are part of daily practice.
This CLE program examines the intersection of incivility and attorney well-being, exploring how workplace and professional conduct—including bullying, unreasonable demands, hostility, and routine discourtesy—can contribute to burnout, anxiety, depression, substance misuse, and other challenges affecting the legal profession. The program will consider how polarization, digital communication, and a “win-at-all-costs” mentality can further strain professional relationships and undermine lawyer wellness.
Attorneys will gain practical guidance for recognizing the warning signs of incivility and burnout, understanding how the two can reinforce one another, and navigating difficult professional interactions without compromising effective advocacy. The program will also address strategies for fostering greater civility, maintaining professional boundaries, and supporting a healthier and more sustainable legal practice.
