In this CLE presentation, a veteran personal injury defense lawyer shares his belief that jurors really try hard to do the right thing, and this means they base their decisions on the EVIDENCE.

The case is made for aggressively calling treating doctors, nurses, and other medical providers to testify about critical chart entries bearing on liability, proximate cause, and damages. The benefit of getting medical evidence in through the original author versus an expert is discussed, as well as how to manage the risk of calling a medical witness to whom you cannot freely talk before they take the stand.

The second half of the class offers tips on jury selection, opening statements, direct examination, cross examination, handling experts and striking a balance when attacking the credibility of a party.

Lecturer Bio

Michael F. Burns, Esq.

Mike graduated with high honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 1983 and has since devoted his professional life to being a trial lawyer. To date he has tried 55 cases to a jury verdict, 13 of which were for plaintiffs.

In 2007 Mike joined Chilton Yambert Porter LLP where he concentrates his practice on Transportation Law, defending wrongful death and catastrophic injury cases arising out of both automobile and commercial trucking claims.

Mike believes that juries make their decisions based on the evidence and that his job is to go get it. In 2018 Mike went to verdict four times, calling a total of 13 treating medical providers to testify at trial, more treating medical providers than any other lawyer in Cook County that year.
