About This Course
This CLE program offers a practical overview of special education law for attorneys seeking to understand how schools and families navigate the rights of students with disabilities. The course will examine the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, highlighting their key distinctions and how they shape obligations to provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE). Topics include referrals, evaluations, eligibility, least restrictive environment (LRE), Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), dispute resolution, and the role of families in the process. The program will conclude with a discussion of potential impacts on special education services if federal education funding is reduced.
