Description

This course is intended to give general attorneys familiarity with issues that arise during patent prosecution, so that the general attorney can more effectively use a patent attorney. Topics include relevant laws, a practical explanation of what occurs during the phases of patent application preparation, including timeframes and costs, basic issues that need to be addressed during patent prosecution, what the patentee can do with a patent, enforcement options, best practices for companies to protect their intellectual property and special ethical issues for patent attorneys.

Lecturer Bios

Brenda Pomerance, Esq.

Brenda Pomerance is a patent attorney sole practitioner and proprietor of Law Offices of Brenda Pomerance in New York City. Since 2000, she had been helping companies protect their intellectual property, mainly software or electrical inventions.

For about ten years previously, she was a patent attorney at major New York City patent firms, and for ten years before her legal career, she was an engineer. Ms. Pomerance had prepared and prosecuted over 1,000 patent applications for many clients. She has written numerous patent invalidity and non-infringement opinions. Ms. Pomerance participated in patent infringement litigation relating to microprocessor architectures (Digital v. Intel), dithering (laser printing of grays), a timer circuit for an air conditioner, a gray scale circuit for a facsimile machine (Acuscan v. Xerox, $40 million jury verdict), a spectrophotometer (color measurement device), and a furniture slipcover retaining device.

Ms. Pomerance holds a JD from Fordham Law School, a MSEE from George Washington University and BSEE and BSCS degrees from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
