Lecturer Bios

Barry S. Alberts, Esq.

Barry S. Alberts is a litigation partner at the Chicago law firm of Schiff Hardin LLP, where he began practicing following his graduation from the University of Chicago Law School. Concentrating his practice on general business litigation, Mr. Alberts regularly represents corporations, corporate officers and directors, as well as lawyers and law firms in a wide variety of litigation matters in both federal and state courts. He has represented lawyers and law firms in connection with professional liability claims, including actions alleging malpractice, breaches of fiduciary duties and ethical violations, as well as in tort actions alleging lawyers’ participation in tax fraud, securities fraud, and violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Mr. Alberts has chaired the Ethics and Professionalism Committee of the American Bar Association’s Section of Litigation and has served as a chair of the Section of Litigation’s Trial Evidence Committee. He is a lecturer in law at the University of Chicago Law School, where he teaches a course on the law and the ethics governing lawyers titled “The Legal Profession,” and he has been an adjunct professor of law at Northwestern University Law School, where he has taught trial advocacy as well as the legal ethics course.

David C. Brezina, Esq.

David C. Brezina is a partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg LLP. He handles primarily patent, trademark and copyright litigation, and also applications and licensing in those areas, as a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department. Mr. Brezina is also a member of the firm’s Sports and Entertainment Law Group and Antitrust Group, and has clients in matters involving manufacturing, distribution retailing and service businesses. He has lectured frequently and published numerous articles on patents, trademarks, copyrights and other topics for both legal and trade publications. He received his B.S.S. degree in political science from Cornell College with undergraduate scientific training concentrated in oceanography. Mr. Brezina earned his J.D. degree, with honors, from the Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology, and a LL.M. degree in intellectual property law from The John Marshall Law School. He is past chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Patent, Trademark and Copyright Committee.

William D. Heinz, Esq.

William D. Heinz is a partner in Jenner & Block’s Chicago office and is a member of the firm’s Litigation Department. He is co-chair of the firm’s Professional Liability Litigation Practice and serves as general counsel to the firm. Mr. Heinz is a member of the Antitrust and Trade Regulation, Business Litigation, ERISA Litigation and Intellectual Property Practices. He also is chair of the firm’s Conflicts Resolution Committee. Mr. Heinz has achieved the highest rating in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. He has broad experience in complex commercial litigation and is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Heinz also has substantial corporate counseling experience. He serves as a director of North American Company for Life and Health Insurance. He is a founding organizer, assistant secretary and counsel to Partners Bank. Mr. Heinz is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association. He is also a member of the ABA Section of Litigation, the Association of Professional Responsibility Attorneys and the Chicago Bar Association. Mr. Heinz is a graduate of Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, with a B.S. degree in economics and finance. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, where he served as an editor of the law review and was elected Order of the Coif.

Roland C. Lara, Esq.

Roland C. Lara is a trial lawyer with Azulay, Horn & Seiden LLC, whose practice has focused on commercial litigation, white-collar criminal defense and general civil litigation. In addition to his trial work, Mr. Lara has handled immigration matters, such as obtaining employment-based visas for corporate clients. He also has significant experience in plaintiffs’-side civil rights class actions involving gender and race discrimination. Mr. Lara is licensed to practice in Illinois and Wisconsin; is admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the Eastern District of Wisconsin, the Eastern District of Michigan and the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals; and is a member of the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois. He received his undergraduate degree from Northwestern University with a major in English and American literature and a minor in Spanish literature. He received his law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law, cum laude.

Corey M. Perman, Esq.

Corey M. Perman is an attorney in the Health Care and Life Sciences and Litigation Practices in Epstein Becker & Green, P.C.’s Chicago office. Mr. Perman’s litigation experience includes representation of small business owners, managed care organizations, pharmaceutical manufacturers, insurers, ERISA health and welfare fiduciaries, nursing home operators and hospital systems. He joined EBG in October 2001 following three years as a trial attorney with the Office of the Solicitor for the U.S. Department of Labor. Mr. Perman earned a J.D. degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he served as an articles editor for the Washington University Journal of Urban and Contemporary Law, in which he was also published. He earned a B.S. degree from Northwestern University, where he majored in communications at the School of Speech and minored in political science.

Daniel E. Tranen, Esq.

Daniel E. Tranen is a partner with the law firm of Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker LLP. He represents lawyers and brokers in professional liability matters and insurance companies in coverage litigation. He is admitted to practice law in the state and federal courts of Missouri, Illinois and Georgia, as well as the federal courts of Indiana and Michigan. Mr. Tranen has previously lectured on avoiding bad faith claims for the Surety Claims Institute and retaliatory litigation for the ABA Tort, Trial and Insurance Section, Fidelity and Surety Law Committee annual meeting. He has also lectured on the attorney-client and work product privileges to various London underwriters. Mr. Tranen received his B.A. degree in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania and his J.D. degree from the University of Illinois College of Law in Champaign-Urbana.
