Lecturer Bios

Stephen V. Falanga

Stephen V. Falanga is a partner in the Corporate Department of Connell Foley LLP and a member of the firm’s practice groups in Banking Law and Finance, Bankruptcy, Reorganization and Creditor’s Rights, and Corporate Law and Transactions. He earned his B.A. degree from St. Peter’s College; his J.D. degree from Boston College; and his LL.M. degree in banking, corporate law and finance from Fordham University School of Law. During law school, Mr. Falanga was a member and editor-in-chief of the Uniform Commercial Code Reporter-Digest. He is a frequent author and a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Essex County Bar Association.

Ira L. Herman

Ira L. Herman, a partner with Thompson & Knight (New York), focuses his practice on the representation of lenders and borrowers, purchasers, and indenture trustees in real estate and other restructuring transactions, workouts and bankruptcy. He has regularly been called upon to address insolvency law issues relating to securitized transactions, and to prosecute commercial litigation regarding debtor and creditor relationships. Mr. Herman is past chair of the New York State Bar Association, Committee on Bankruptcy Law, the city bar and the American Bankruptcy Institute. He is a frequent speaker and author on topics related to his practice areas. Mr. Herman earned his J.D. degree, cum laude and with distinction, from Boston University School of Law, where he was articles editor of the Boston University International Law Journal. He earned his B.A. degree in political science, cum laude, from Yeshiva University.

Evan R. Levy

Evan R. Levy is a real estate partner with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Mr. Levy’s practice emphasizes real estate financings, real estate development projects, real estate private equity funds and securities offerings, and loan workouts and restructurings. His work has involved some of the largest national real estate companies. In the evolving area of capital markets lending, Mr. Levy advises lenders and borrowers in the structuring of securitized mortgage loans, multiple-tier participation interests and B notes, and mezzanine loans and the secondary market trading in these structured instruments. He earned his B.A. degree, magna cum laude, from the University at Albany, State University of New York; his M.B.A. degree from Union College; and his J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Albany Law School of Union University, where he was a note and comment editor for the Albany Law Review.

Daniel J. Mann

Daniel J. Mann is a partner with Blank Rome LLP. Mr. Mann represents a broad range of investors and developers in real estate transactions across the country. His clients include private equity funds, insurance companies, hedge funds, syndications, public and private REITs, realty advisors, pension funds, public companies and private developers. Mr. Mann counsels clients in the following areas: sales, acquisitions and development; structuring and negotiating joint ventures and investment and ownership strategies; financing; and commercial leasing. His experience includes representing a public company in a major New York City mixed use development project involving joint ventures, land acquisition, construction financing, tax structuring, ownership structuring, ground leases, easements and options. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association. Mr. Mann earned a B.A. degree from Yeshiva University and a J.D. degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University.

Jeffrey A. Moerdler

is the New York office section head for the Real Estate and Communications Sections of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., as well as a member of the Environmental Section. He has been a general commercial real estate attorney for over 25 years. Mr. Moerdler has represented large national companies, as well as representing numerous smaller local clients. His real estate practice includes representation of landlords and tenants, counseling owners and developers, advising lenders and borrowers, and representing all parties in real estate litigation. In 2002 Mr. Moerdler was elected to the American College of Real estate Lawyers, and in 2006 and 2007, he was named a New York Super Lawyer in The New York Times. He is a frequent presenter and has written numerous articles on communications and real estate subjects. He was awarded his B.A. degree by Columbia College of Columbia University and his J.D. degree by the New York University School of Law.

Paul A. Rubin

Paul A. Rubin, is a member of Herrick, Feinstein LLP, resident in its New York office. He concentrates his practice in bankruptcy and restructuring, insolvency and creditors’ rights, and related litigation. His practice includes advising clients with respect to pre-bankruptcy planning and strategy, out-of-court restructurings and workouts, and the bankruptcy implications of transactions. Mr. Rubin has lectured on several bankruptcy topics including valuation issues in bankruptcy and the acquisition of distressed debt. He has also authored numerous articles for a variety of legal publications. Mr. Rubin is a member of the board of editors of The Bankruptcy Strategist and is the editor of his firm’s bimonthly bulletin, Lending & Restructuring Alert, which reports on significant issues in the lending and banking area. He earned his undergraduate degree from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and his J.D. degree, cum laude, from Fordham University School of Law, where he is a member of the Law Review.

Robert J. Semaya

Robert J. Semaya is a partner in the Litigation Practice Group of Moses & Singer LLP. Mr. Semaya is an experienced litigator who represents a diverse group of clients in a broad range of commercial and real property matters before federal, state and local courts, administrative tribunals and arbitrators. His practice is varied and includes representation of real estate developers, banks, financial services companies, manufacturers, retailers, hotel operators, restauranteurs, owners and operators of parking facilities and entertainment companies. Prior to joining Moses & Singer, Mr. Semaya was the partner in charge of the real estate foreclosure group at a prominent New York firm. He earned his B.A. degree from the University at Albany, State University of New York and his J.D. degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University.
